Poetry Friday: To the New Year, by W.S. Merwin

I love this one.

Happy Poetry Friday, Happy New Year, Happy Hope.

To the New Year
By W.S. Merwin

With what stillness at last
you appear in the valley
your first sunlight reaching down
to touch the tips of a few
high leaves that do not stir
....

"...our hopes such as they are
invisible before us
untouched and still possible"

That really sums up the new year feeling, doesn't it? Thank you for sharing this lovely poem.

Wonderful, lilting and positive, and we go into the new year "untouched and still possible". Happy New Year, Karen!

Lovely wish for the new year. I love how things are still possible as the new year begins. I suppose that's true all the time since time is just how we mark and measure the passing of days. As long as we have breath there is hope.

I always have hopes for the new year. Although this year, it seems like worries are thicker than hopes.

That moment when the first light touches the tops of the trees...so brief...like one breath made visible in the cold air. Thanks to Hope and Possibility that there will be another, and another.

Lovely. The word stillness is so pretty. I use it a lot and I really enjoy finding it in other poems. Happy New Year!

This is a favorite poem of mine too, just shared it in my Poetry Friday post last week! Thanks again, love the doves, and the feeling of possibility, thanks Karen!

I see that Christie shared the same lines that touched her:
our knowledge such as it is
and our hopes such as they are
invisible before us
untouched and still possible

Hope is my one word for this year so these lines need to go into my notebook. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. It validates that hope is the right word for me.
